Mozart Timeline

Così fan tutte – Singapore, Barcelona, Zurich

One of the most popular Mozart operas is on the schedule of three different renowned opera houses in February: Così fan tutte – Thus Do They All. The musical comedy about love, fidelity and treason has seen many different interpretations over the years – three of them are to be performed in Barcelona, Zurich and Singapore. Why not set out on a musical journey of exploration? Thus Do Only A Few.

22 January 2014 Events

Mozart composed Così fan tutte for Emperor Joseph II in 1790. He planned the genre picture set in Naples as a mirror image of the depravity of the high society in Vienna. The emperor, who loved jokes at the expense of “his Viennese”, was highly amused. This opera, Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro are probably the most popular of Mozart’s works and are frequently performed.

Even Southeast Asia is thrilled by Thus Do They All. Therefore, Così fan tutte will be performed on February 28 and on March 1 and 3 at the Singapore Lyric Opera. The cast sports world-class singers; Dorabella, for instance, will be sung by the Chinese mezzo-soprano Du Quin, soprano Rachelle Gerodias is Fiordiligi, the Australian bass-tenor David Hibbard plays Don Alfonso and the British director Tom Hawkes is responsible for the artistic direction.

One of the main attractions in Singapore is the Lyric Opera itself. It is located in the Esplanade, a vast, architecturally highly sophisticated building, which was built on a headland created solely for this purpose. The cultural centre is better known as “The Durians”, because it looks almost exactly like the famous Southeast Asian fruit with its overpowering smell. The concert hall is located in one of “The Durians”.

Good old Europe – always a perfect location for Mozart

The love intrigues of Così are also in the limelight in two European metropolises in February – although the approaches are quite different. The Swiss perform the opera at the Zurich Opera House on February 6, 9, 12 and 16 in an exciting production by Sven-Eric Bechtolf. The young Czech conductor Tomáš Netopil will give his debut in Zurich.

Così fan tutte at the renowned Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona is a unique pleasure in the truest sense of the word. On February 15, the opera is performed in an abridged production by Carol López in Catalan - a version full of humour and tumultuous scenes which will remain in the memory.
