Le Nozze di Figaro in the Sultanate of Oman

13 August 2013 Events

A unique world premiere: a guest performance of the Vienna State Opera in the Sultanate of Oman in November 2013. Austrian opera grandezza meets oriental architectural opulence – and a fascinated audience. “The Marriage of Figaro” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is spirited away to the fairy tale realm of 1001 nights of the Royal Opera House.

Most certainly all participants are looking forward to the debut of the Vienna State Opera in Oman. It will be guest at one of the most magnificent opera houses of the world – incidentally the only one in the Gulf States – with “The Marriage of Figaro" on November 28, 29 and 30, 2013. The opera is performed in the classic production of opera director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, who passed away in 1988. He started his international career as Mozart director in the 1960s and 1970s at the Salzburg Festival among other places. Alain Altinoglu is responsible for the musical direction, Adam Plachetka and Simone Alberghini as Count Almaviva, Dorothea Roeschmann and Maija Kovalevska as Countess Almaviva, and Luca Pisaroni and Alessio Arduini as Figaro star as singers.

Music by Mozart – Austria’s musical export hit

Austria and Mozart belong together. In the Vienna State Opera this “duo” has found the perfect international ambassador. The opera house at the Ring Boulevard performs guest performances abroad with an incredible effort. The entire ensemble is not known for 'travelling light'. The stage set, the entire team of stage technicians and the ensemble always travel together.

A building from Aladdin’s magic lamp

The Vienna State Orchestra finds a magical venue in the Royal Opera House. The breath-taking building constructed in a modern Omani architectural style enchants opera lovers with its opulence. Precious marble meets cutting edge opera technology. Many seats have their own monitor, providing Arab and English subtitles. One of the opera’s hallmarks is the gigantic organ with over 70 registers and four manuals, which was manufactured in Germany.

The final concerts of the guest performance by the Vienna State Opera, “Masterworks of the 20th Century”, take place on January 18, 19 and 20, 2014 at the Royal Opera House.
