Mozart Timeline

Royal Expectations

Next February 15th still seems very far off. But this is a good thing! It leaves more time to plan a trip to Zurich and to look forward to a concert that no lover of Mozart’s church music should miss. The Swiss concert organiser Obrasso Classic Events has put Mozart’s Coronation Mass on the schedule of the Tonhalle Zurich concert hall – and a bit more besides …

27 November 2013 Events

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his Missa brevis in C major (K. 317) as a commission for Prince-Archbishop Colloredo of Salzburg – most likely for the service at the Salzburg Cathedral on Easter Sunday 1779. The work was renamed Coronation Mass after Mozart’s death, when it was performed in the course of the coronation ceremonies of kings and emperors, such as Leopold II in Frankfurt.

The Coronation Mass will be performed at the great concert hall of the Tonhalle Zurich in Switzerland by the renowned Baden-Baden Philharmonic and the concert choir Canto Classico under the direction of Manfred Obrecht. Soloists such as Anica Defuns (soprano), Violetta Radomirska (alto), Hans-Jürg Rickenbacher (tenor) and Marc-Olivier Oetterli (bass) will crown this monumental masterpiece with musical highlights. The second work by Mozart performed this night is also a work of church music: the Ave Verum Corpus motet in D major (K. 618). The setting of the text was composed to celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi in the late middle ages.

In addition to both works by Mozart, pieces by Carl Maria von Weber, Edvard Grieg and Joseph Haydn will be performed.

World Class: the “Slovakian Nightingale” on February 11, 2014

A very different aspect of Mozart’s work will be under the spotlight during a recital with Edita Gruberova on February 11, 2014. Gruberova is one of the best coloratura sopranos in the world and will perform at the Tonhalle Zurich in the course of the Audi Classical Experience concert cycle. The world famous arias for women from the operas Opern Don Giovanni (Donna Anna), Abduction from the Seraglio (Konstanze), Mitridate (Sifare) and Così fan tutte (Fiordiligi) guarantee a unique musical highlight at the great concert hall of the Tonhalle Zurich. Gruberova performs with the Chamber Orchestra Munich conducted by Douglas Boyd.
