Mozart Timeline

Mozart Week January 23rd – February 2nd, 2014

We celebrate the anniversary of Mozart’s birth for the 258th time on January 27th, 2014 – maybe not a “round” anniversary, but Mozart would not have minded at all. The people of Salzburg think that every anniversary of Mozart’s birthday is equally important; therefore, the International Mozarteum Foundation hosts the annual Mozart Week to commemorate the work of the great musical genius. However, two other great composers actually do celebrate “round” anniversaries in 2014: it is Christoph Willibald Gluck’s 300th and Richard Strauss’s 150th anniversary – and both composers find themselves in the limelight during Mozart Week.

30 December 2013 Events

It goes without saying that Mozart remains the ultimate star of Mozart Week. Since 1956, this unique festival has brought the best orchestras, ensembles and artists to Salzburg, Austria. Opera performances, orchestra and chamber concerts and performances by soloists are on the schedule. Mozart interpreters such as Nicolaus Harnoncourt, Andràs Schiff and Marc Minkowski, and orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Musiciens du Louvre Grenoble and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, imbue Mozart Week with exceptional splendour. And of course, ensembles such as the Hagen Quartet and the Artemist Quartet along with many world-class soloists must not be forgotten.

Highlights of Mozart Week 2014

Marc Minkowski, artistic director of Mozart Week, will conduct the Viennese version of Gluck’s opera Orfeo ed Euridice with countertenor Bejun Mehta as Orpheus, Camilla Tilling as Euridice and Maria Savastano as Amor. The Bach Choir Salzburg perform the choral parts and the Musiciens du Louvre will enchant the audience with their music.

The Vienna Philharmonic, the chamber orchestra Cappella Andrea Barca under the artistic direction of Andràs Schiff, the Baroque Orchestra Freiburg and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra guarantee further musical highlights. Exceptional soloists such as Anja Harteros, Kristian Bezuidenhout, Rolando Villazón, Fazil Say and Michael Schade will enchant the audience, performing works by Richard Strauss.
